Full NJPW Sakura Genesis 2026 Results: Callum Newman Wins IWGP Heavyweight Title

NJPW Sakura Genesis 2026 took place today at Tokyo’s iconic Ryogoku Kokugikan. Here are the full results from the event.

Before the show got underway, Kushida and Masatora Yasuda overcame Tatsuya Matsumoto and Taisei Nakahara in a tag team match. The opening match of the Sakura Genesis card saw Kosei Fujita and Hartley Jackson of The Mighty Don’t Kneel defeat Togi Makabe and Master Wato. Unbound Co.’s Robbie X, Shingo Takagi and Taiji Ishimori then beat Jake Lee, Francesco Akira and Jakob Austin Young of the United Empire.

Sakura Genesis continued with Aaron Wolf, Toru Yano, Tiger Mask and Yoh picking up the win against Don Fale, Douki, Sho and Yoshinobu Kanemaru of House of Torture in an eight-man tag team match. Will Ospreay then made his triumphant return to NJPW, successfully teaming up with United Empire’s Henare and Great-O-Khan against Yuya Uemura, Taichi and El Desperado. 

The first championship match of the night then took place, with Boltin Oleg, Hirooki Goto and Yoshi-Hashi retaining the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship against House of Torture’s Ren Narita, Chase Owens and Yujiro Takahashi. Konosuke Takeshita’s defense of the NJPW World Television Championship against Shota Umino ended in a time-limit draw. following that bout, a mysterious masked individual appeared at ringside and confronted Takeshita. This allowed Owens to attack the champion. 

The penultimate match of Sakura Genesis saw the Knock Out Brothers, Oskar and Yuto-Ice, retain the IWGP Tag Team Championship against Zack Sabre Jr. and Ryohei Oiwa of The Mighty Don’t Kneel. And in the final battle of the show, New Japan Cup 2026 winner Callum Newman defeated Yota Tsuji to become the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. As a result, Newman became the youngest IWGP Heavyweight Champion in history.

After the match, a mysterious man appeared. It turned out to be Gabe Kidd, wearing an AEW shirt, who attacked Tsuji. Shingo Takagi appeared. Kidd left the scene with Tsuji’s IWGP Global Heavyweight Title. Takagi then challenged Newman to a world title match. As gold confetti came down from the rafters, Newman and the rest of the United Empire celebrated his championship victory.
